Rail Mounted Gantry Wheel Refurbishment (BIFT)
We were contacted by Maritime Transport who asked us to work on a complete gantry wheel refurbishment for one of the two rail mounted gantries on their BIFT (Birmingham international freight terminal) site.
Maritime, who are a market-leading intermodal logistics company, quite obviously have a strict schedule to adhere to and we worked with them on every step of the way to meet their operational requirements.
To summarise the work undertaken we had to firstly elevate the crane using multiple hydraulic jacks, this was to remove the crane’s wheels contact with the rail allowing us to remove the wheels. To remove the wheels we then had to remove the motors and gearbox assembly that was connected to the shaft of each wheel.
To remove each assembly we used a hydraulic jack to essentially press the gearboxes off of the drive shafts, this was the safest and best way to do this task as it ensured no damage was done to the shafts or gearboxes.
Now that we had the wheels exposed we removed them and had them refurbished.
Whilst all that work was going on we split the motors from the gearboxes, resealed the gearboxes and carried out the necessary motor inspections.
All the work had now been completed so we reassembled the whole job in reverse order and carried out a complete wheel alignment to ensure the crane ran true on its running rails.
